The Health Benefits of Visceral Manipulation

Visceral Manipulation Therapy is a massage technique that focuses on the internal organs and their interrelationship with one another. The compromised condition of any one organ impinges upon the entire system. This manipulation aids motility and strengthening to not only the target organ, but the surrounding area as well. This massage technique was developed by Dr. Jean-Pierre Barral, a French osteopath and physical therapist who developed the modality in 1974.

Massage manipulation has been a part of various cultures throughout recorded history, and is central to medical systems in the Orient. Dr. Jean-Pierre Barral had been studying biomechanics in his patients since 1971, pursuing his observation regarding the significance of the visceral system and how it developed tension lines in the body. His observations suggested that tissues have memory.

These observations came to a head while he was treating a patient with spinal pain. The patient mentioned that his pain was greatly reduced after going to an old man who pushed something in his abdomen. This augmented Barral's study of the relationship of the spine with the viscera.
He began successfully performing stomach manipulations with patients, which relieved their back pain and improved their overall, systemic health. He continued to study how the thickening of body tissues develop areas of tension that pull on the surrounding area, creating more tension. This work led to his practical and theoretical visceral listening techniques.

He developed visceral massage manipulation and taught spinal biomechanics at England's European School of Osteopathy from 1975 to 1982, and wrote Articular Vertebra Diagnosis with Dr. Pierre Mercier and Dr. Jea-Paul Mathieu.

Dr. Barral has subsequently documented the changes in viscera before manipulation and after manipulation with both ultrasound and x-ray fluoroscopy, recording changes in motility, position, fluid present and the evacuation of organs. This research was further developed by the use of infrared bodily emissions.

How Visceral Manipulation Therapy Works
How Visceral Manipulation Therapy Works
Visceral Manipulation therapy addresses the strains that can occur in the connective tissues of viscera, which may result from illness, poor posture, injury and surgical scars.
Because the fascial and ligament attachments to the musculoskeletal structure are all connected, there are patterns of tension that can develop in this network.
These tension patterns may result in effects far from the point of origination, manifesting as pain and other issues throughout the patient's body. These points of tension require that the rest of the system must work around it, which only produces more tension. This chronic irritation ultimately develops both structural and functional problems.

Process of Evaluation

A qualified therapist first makes an evaluation of the suspension and the motion of the patient's membranes, fascia, ligaments and organs, then develops a treatment plan. The ultimate result is an improved and healthy communication among these bodily systems. For the patient it means relief from pain, improvement of the presenting dysfunction, improved posture, relief from the psychological dynamics of anxiety and depression and an overall revitalization.

By massaging the abnormal flow, the channels are opened to allow health to be restored. The body is first of all equipped to be healthy and whole, so treatment that assists in the body's natural inclination to health is generally very effective. Reducing or releasing tension and restoring motility to one location can have profound, systemic results. Stress is relieved, both physiologically and psychologically. The patient has improved mobility and improved metabolism.

Visceral Manipulation Procedure

This manipulation therapy is performed by soft massage for the purpose of encouraging the tone and mobility of viscera and connective tissue, which improves the function of individual organs, their systems and radiates out to the structural system of the whole body.

Because the visceral tissues are delicate and tend to react dynamically from input, this massage technique often has nearly immediate and dramatic positive results. The intention of this form of therapy is simply to support the underpinning of healthy functioning in the individual that is already present, but blocked. The trained practitioner of Visceral Manipulation Therapy in NYC and Wantagh, Long Island is as able to ascertain the location and type of massage needed by the viscera as a therapist specializing in muscle massage is able to feel knots and tensions in the muscular structure.

Dr. Barral began teaching this technique in the US in 1985, and has taught a team of  teachers around the world. The training is rigorous and is required of any health professional desiring to practice this massage technique.
