Common Causes of Poor Posture
Poor posture often occurs as a result of repeated bent postures over a prolonged time, such as slouching, which typically causes muscle strain and fatigue that becomes more apparent in adulthood. It can also occur from diseases, such as degenerative joint disease, also known as osteoarthritis, and rickets, cause the bones and muscles to become weak, which in turn also causes the joints to lose their mobility and strength, throwing off the body's control and balance thus leading to poor posture.
Injury to the muscles, bones, or ligaments can cause that area to become weak, which can throw the body's structure out of balance, leading to poor posture.
A past injury to the muscles, bone, or ligament may also contribute to poor posture because it may cause you to continue to slump even after the wound has healed.
Poor posture can also be caused by weak postural muscles, which may not be strong enough to maintain proper alignment. Maintaining proper posture requires some strength and endurance; therefore, the postural muscles may need to be strengthened in some individuals in order to maintain an appropriate alignment.
Extremely tight muscles can place a continued strain on a joint, which can eventually cause the joint to become misaligned; thereby putting more stress on areas that are unable to support stress, which can lead to poor posture.
Decreased flexibility increases stiffness in the joints, which impedes the joint's range of motion, especially in the areas needed to maintain proper alignment and balance, such as the shoulders and the hip, which can cause poor posture.
How Regular Posture Massage Therapy Can Help
To maintain good posture and balance, you need to have sufficient muscle strength and flexibility as well as good joint motion in the spine and other parts of the body. You also need balanced, properly working, postural muscles on both sides of the spine.
Massage therapy for posture and balance can be used to improve muscle strength and flexibility as well as joint motion in older adults with poor posture or balance. Research published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health shows that massage therapy can be used to improve stability in older adults.
According to the research, just a 60-minute full body massage showed an improvement in balance as well as various psychological factors related to balance in older individuals, including improved confidence, happiness, and satisfaction. These results were even more pronounced after six weeks of massage therapy.
There are various massage techniques that I can use to help improve your posture as well as address any pain or imbalances associated with your misalignment to help get you back on the road to enjoying your life. When we meet, we talk about your symptoms and medical history and then develop a personalized plan just for you.
In addition to regular massage, it is also essential to practice proper posture while at home, which can be done just by being mindful of your postural habits and then correcting them accordingly. Good posture should feel effortless; therefore, listen to your body and then make minor adjustments while sitting and standing to a position that feels more fluid.
