"Tui-na is a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for generations to treat various ailments. It seeks to influence the flow of Qi throughout the body, via the 12 meridian points."

The Health Benefits of Tui-na Massage Therapy

In recent years Tui-na has grown in popularity as a type of massage therapy. Pronounced as "twee-nah," Tui means "push," and Na means "grasp" or "pull." It is a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been used by Chinese for over 4,000 years now. It adopts the thought commonly found in TCM that declares that diseases or injuries lead to blockages in the body's channels. The blockage, in turn, results in pain for the injured or sick person.

Other components of TCM that share common aspects with Tui-na include:
  • Cupping
  • Acupressure
  • Acupuncture
  • Chinese herbs
  • Moxibustion
  • Tai Chi
Chi (also known as Qi) is an energy force of life that Tui-na seeks to influence for the benefit of the client receiving the massage. Qi flows freely and is present in all living forms. A healthy individual has Qi that is well balanced and free-flowing throughout their entire body. When they are in this state, they are free of injury or disease.

Although it has come to the mainstream western populace in recent years, it has always been documented for its benefits by the ancient practitioners. The Yellow Emperor's Classics of Internal Medicine, which was written 2,500 years ago, documents Tui-na, its techniques, and the benefits accruing from it.

How Does It Work?

I start by interacting with the client seeking the massage. I will ask you questions that delve into your lifestyle. The goal here is to create a connection or awareness between us, which helps me assess how to carry out your massage, such as which methodology to use, what level of pressure to apply, areas to focus on, etc.

I will then, move on to explain precisely what Tui-na massage is, and how I believe these healing benefits will best suit you. We will start either sitting or lying down, depending on how old you are and what condition you are in, for example, an expectant woman.

Unlike other kinds of massages, you do not need to remove any article of clothing other than your shoes, coat, and any jewelry you may have on.
I may use therapeutic oil but mostly on your feet, hands and neck. Once the massage is over, I may offer you advice touching on lifestyle, exercise, and dieting. Wearing loose clothing is advisable when going for a Tui-na massage so as not to restrict the movement used in applying the various techniques.

Twelve meridian points form a network along one's body. They occur in pairs with each one on the right and left side. The points affect the flow of energy throughout the body, and at times the effect can express itself away from the areas of stimulation. The points are where the needles in acupuncture and pressure or heat in Tui-na is applied to influence the energy flow.

Some of the techniques the practitioner will use include:
  • Kneading
  • Chopping
  • Hacking
  • Rolling
  • Perpendicular pressure

Are There Any Health Benefits to Tui-na?

There are advantages to using Tui-na massage, and they include:

Scope of Treatment

While Tui-na can be a method of treating specific areas, e.g., pain occurring in the neck, shoulder or back, it can also be used to impact your Qi positively. Because it is by its very nature a complete system, it treats both specific and overall Qi simultaneously providing more relief. It also addresses a diverse range of conditions, injuries, and ailments.

Easy Integration

Tui-na works well alongside other forms of treatment like traditional medicine, alternative medicine, myofascial release, sports massage and deep-tissue neuromuscular work. In this respect, it becomes a potent tool in the arsenal against these conditions and ailments which can contribute to faster recovery times. Since it uses the same methodologies as acupuncture, it can be used to compliment it as well.
