What is Carpal Tunnel?

Carpal tunnel, also commonly referred to as median nerve entrapment, is a progressively painful condition that affects the wrist, hands, fingers, especially the finger next to the thumbs as well as the thumbs, and the forearms.

The bottom of your hand contains a narrow passageway, called the carpal tunnel, which contains various ligaments, bones, and tendons that bend the fingers, as well as nerves, which run from the forearm into the palm the hand.

Sometimes the tendons can become irritated or swell, due to various factors, which causes the tunnel to become restricted. As a result, it puts added pressure on the median nerve, which causes it to become inhibited. When this occurs, it causes various issues, which begin gradually and then become more pronounced over time, including difficulty gripping objects, and more. That being said, carpal tunnel is usually a result of various factors that reduce the available space within the carpal tunnel rather than a problem with the median nerve itself.

While all of this is true, research shows that a lot of the symptoms related to carpal tunnel originate in the neck or in the elbow. This is because the median nerve starts in the brachial plexus of the neck from C6 to T1. Here, the "C" stands for cervical (neck) and "T" stands for the thorax. The branches then go down the arm through various muscles and ends in the palm of the hand. Many times I can alleviate the symptoms of carpel tunnel by releasing the restrictions in the neck and forearm.

The Most Common Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Include:
  • Numbness
  • Pain
  • Tingling
Carpal tunnel typically begins with numbness or tingling in the palm of the hand or the wrist, which may be accompanied by bouts of intense pain that pierce the wrist and then travels up your arm similar to muscle spasm. However, as it progresses, it can also cause your grip to become weak.
These symptoms can occur in just one hand or both and typically also affects the thumb as well as the two fingers adjacent to it in addition to the ring finger before extending into the forearm.

Symptoms may first appear during the night or upon arising in the morning, which are usually characterized by a need to relax your hands due to the discomfort. Some patients also report that the pain wakes them up throughout the night. Sleeping on your side can block blood flow to the median nerve at the neck, thus giving you symptoms in your hands, forearm, or even the whole arm.

As the condition progresses, the symptoms can become more prevalent throughout the day. You may even notice a loosened grip that makes it difficult to form a fist or to grasp certain objects. Small tasks like buttoning your shirt, using a computer, or opening jars may also become more difficult.

Common Causes of Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel affects more than up to 6 percent of American adults, usually between the ages of 45 and 64, and is typically more common in females than in males perhaps due to the carpal tunnel being smaller in women. It is also most often caused by repetitive hand movements, such as those used in typing, assembly line work, fishing, sewing, cleaning, and more.
  • Injury to the wrist the wrist that causes swelling, such as a sprain or a fracture, has also been linked to carpal tunnel.
  • Carpal tunnel can also be caused by rheumatoid arthritis as this condition typically causes swelling in the hands and wrist, which compresses the median nerve.
  • Fluid retention has also been shown to increase the risk of developing carpal tunnel, which can occur as a result of female hormonal imbalances as well as certain diseases.
  • A dysfunctional pituitary or thyroid gland has also been shown to cause carpal tunnel.
  • Diabetes can also cause carpal tunnel.
  • A tumor or cyst in the tunnel can also cause compression of the median nerve, which can lead to carpal tunnel.
  • Carrying extra weight exerts pressure on the median nerve, which has also been shown to be a contributing factor in developing carpal tunnel.
How Regular Massage Therapy Can Help

Without treatment, carpal tunnel can eventually cause permanent numbing in the fingers in addition to permanent weakness in the tendons that control the median nerve, which can cause you to lose partial use of your hands. However, regular massage can be used to relieve the pain and tension associated with carpal tunnel. In fact, research published in the U.S. National Library of National Institutes of Health showed that just 30 minutes of carpal tunnel massage therapy incorporated twice a week, using a combination of massage and trigger point therapy, provided a drastic reduction in carpal tunnel symptoms and in as little as two weeks.

Being a carpal tunnel massage therapist who is well adept in trigger point therapy, which stimulates constricted areas in the muscles to release tension, as well as various other massage techniques, I have the experience to help you alleviate your chronic pain and discomfort.
